The kickoff for The Billiard Ball: Twenties-Twelve & Putting on the Ritz benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas was generously sponsored and hosted by Brian Twomey and Mark Hearl, owners of the Village Marquee Grill & Bar in Highland Park Village in Dallas.

Chris Trowbridge, one of The Billiard Ball 2012 Chairmen, thanked his wife, Rachel Trowbridge and JB Hayes for joining him in chairing the ball, then Chris introduced Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas Board member, Bobby Nail, husband of Patty Dedman-Nail, to talk about the Robert H. Dedman Lifetime Achievement Award for Philanthropy.

Chris then spoke about the history of the Dedman award. “This is the 9th year of The Billiard Ball, and each year the Robert H. Dedman Lifetime Achievement Award for Philanthropy is presented to honor the generosity shown to those who cannot provide for themselves,” Chris said. “The legacy Mr. Dedman has left behind, and the award that carried his name, strives to recognize the lifetime of an individual or couple who have exemplified what it means to be in service to the community.”

Mentioning prior Award recipients including Ruth Altshuler, Linda Pitts Custard, Caren Prothro, Dee and Charles Wyly, Henry S. Miller, Jr., Gay and Bill Solomon and Bobby Lyle, Chris then announced Barbara and Steve Durham as the 2012 recipients of the Robert H. Dedman Lifetime Achievement Award for Philanthropy, saying, “Barbara and Steve share a passion for helping underprivileged members of our community and their interests align perfectly with the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas.”

“The Dedman Family is very proud to have Barbara and Steve Durham as the Robert H. Dedman Lifetime Achievement Award recipients,” Bobby Nail said. “The Durhams are true examples of Mr. Dedman's philosophy regarding giving; ‘Give while you live.’  We look forward to celebrating and honoring this wonderful family.”

The Durham’s involvements include Steve serving on the Thanksgiving Square Foundation, and serving on the boards of the Southwest Regional Board of BGCA, Phoenix House, the Dallas Symphony, Human Rights Initiative, and the Dallas Zoological Society.

Barbara co-chaired the Thanks-Giving Square Dinner for two years and is very active on the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Board, where she is currently a member of the executive board.

Barbara and Steve together have chaired numerous events including the Dallas Museum of Art's Beaux Arts Ball in 2002, and the 2009 Dallas Symphony Gala.

But their penultimate accomplishment was achieved in spring 2011, when they conceived of and chaired Ebby100, celebrating Ebby Halliday's 100th birthday, raising over $500,000 to benefit the Horatio Alger Association.

Slated for Saturday, February 18, at the Ritz-Carlton, Dallas, The Billiard Ball begins with cocktail reception and features a seated dinner, silent auction and raffle, award presentation then dancing to the big band tunes of Hunter Sullivan and his orchestra.

“Raising over $1.9 million since its inception, The Billiard Ball is an essential fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas,” said Charles English, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. “Because of the generosity of our sponsors, all proceeds will benefit Project Learn and will assist in BGCD’s ability to serve 20% more youth over the last year with impactful programs and measurable outcomes.”

Sponsors for the 2012 ball as of the kickoff party include: Jan and Jeff Rich, Side Pocket Sponsor, $10,000; PriceWatershouseCoopers, Center Pocket Sponsor, $7,500; and Ebby Halliday, Bell Nunnally & Martin LLP and Commerce House, Break Shot Sponsorships, $5,000 each.
