10 - 14: The Dallas Opera's "Figaro in Flip Flops" will keep the entertainment coming during the “off-season” with a series of low cost and free events designed to keep North Texas Opera lovers excited about their favorite art form while exploring new opportunities and horizons. This multi-faceted series, entitled “FIGARO IN FLIP-FLOPS,” presented by One Arts Plaza, will run through October 26, 2008 in a variety of interesting and unusual locations throughout Greater Dallas. Flip-Flops are optional – Reservations for tastings and receptions are required. Call 214-443-1000 for paid events. Most of these events are free, a few require a nominal fee to cover actual costs. And there’s something for every budget and taste. Details. 20: Texas Trailblazer Award Luncheon benefitting The Family Place at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. The Texas Trailblazer Award Luncheon recognizes North Texas women who have achieved significant success despite the obstacles they have faced along the way. These women opened the doors of opportunity for other women. They have made significant contributions in their community or profession. New this year, men and students will be honored who have stood up in the face of adversity to champion violence-free relationships among their peers and community. Additionally, a company will be recognized who has supported the mission of The Family Place in the community and within their own organization. The guest speaker for this fundraising luncheon is Ms. Janine Latus. In 2002, Ms. Latus’s younger sister was strangled by her boyfriend and buried near a construction site. It took more than two weeks to find her body and two years before her killer was sentenced for her murder. Since this tragedy, Ms. Latus has authored a book about domestic violence and publicly speaks out to encourage others to take advantage of the avenues available to find a way out. 4: FREE Regional Premiere Screening of the new documentary, HAZE, presented by The Gordie Foundation and Southern Methodist University’s Student Life Division in observance of National Alcohol Awareness Month.
